Doubtless, you’ve heard that maintaining your business coaching website is important, but do you know why? Do you know what you need to be doing to keep your business coaching website up to date and secure?
Keeping your website up to date is the best thing you can do to keep out hackers. If hackers get into your site, you could end up spending a lot of money to restore your site, or in the worst cases, you may lose your site altogether. So, maintaining your site is very important.
The first step in maintaining your business coaching website is to make a backup. This is important because while you are updating the files, you may end up with a broken site, so it’s crucial to have a good backup to restore from if necessary. But, don’t let that scare you into not doing anything. Some of my clients have been so paralyzed by fear of breaking something that they just left their site as is and ended up being hacked. It’s better to hire someone to do it for a minimal fee than to be too afraid to do anything and let it go.
That being said, there are many plugins and tools available to help you in this regard. If your hosting provider gives you backups, make sure they are running. There’s nothing worse than finding out too late that you had to set up the automatic backups to run, so you have no backups. Likewise, a local backup on your server may not do you any good if something happens to your hosting provider. The best thing to do is keep a backup in the cloud somewhere besides your hosting server in case something goes wrong at your hosting service. Most of the time, backups are set to run automatically, but it’s good to double check when the last backup was made before you do your updates.
Once you have verified that you have a good backup, you are ready to update the wordpress files, the plugin files, and the theme files. I recommend doing this at least once a month. To do this, log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to dashboard>updates. From there, you will see how many updates are needed and you can run each update section (wordpress, plugins, and themes) to update. This just takes a moment. Once it has finished updating all of these sections, you will need to check the front end of your website. Check for things that are not formatted correctly. Check popups and contact forms as well as sidebars and footers. Make sure that the website looks and performs like it should. If there is anything amiss, you can roll back to a restored version of your site by locating the backup and restoring it. If you run into any trouble, I would recommend contacting me as soon as possible rather than doing anything you may be uncomfortable with. Usually any problems encountered can be quickly fixed, so don’t let that stop you from contacting me if you need some help.
Another part of keeping your site maintained is checking on the firewall scan, such as wordfence. This scan can alert you to any malicious files that may be on your site. Firewalls and scanners are important to keep you aware of anything that looks suspicious on your business coaching website. I recommend using ithemes security and wordfence together for most hosting situations. However, there are some hosting platforms that provide their own security layers and don’t work with these plugins, so check with me if you’re unsure.
An often overlooked part of maintaining your business coaching website is blogging. That’s right, you should be regularly adding content to your website in order to do well in search results. So, you paid good money to have your site SEO done for you. But, did you know that the original SEO will not keep you at the top of the results on a continual basis? You need to deliver fresh, relevant content in order to keep google satisfied. That means if you haven’t added to your website and shared that new information on social media, you will be losing traffic to your website.
